Scaling and Root Planning
At Clark Family Dental, we take care of our patients’ oral health. Our office in Laramie offers full-service dentistry to address issues in each part of the smile. We use scaling and root planning to keep the gums and teeth roots healthy. This treatment is standard for patients who have a mild periodontal disease.
Daily brushing and flossing are essential to preventing the spread of decay that causes oral health issues. At each dental cleaning, our team charts gum pocket depth and recommends what patients should do if we find periodontal disease.
Periodontitis and Gum Recession
Teeth and gums require an equal amount of attention and hygiene. Brushing protects teeth from decay, while flossing removes food particles that will allow bacteria to develop. If flossing is neglected, the toothbrush is used too vigorously, or genetic factors make gums more susceptible to bacteria. As the microorganisms spread, they attack the connective tissue between gums and teeth, resulting in pockets. Additional symptoms of early gum disease include:
- Sensitive Soft Tissue
- Minor Bleeding while Flossing
- Uneven Gum Line
The Dangers of Untreated Gum Disease
Bacterial spread can be slowed or halted with proper attention, but the most severe health concerns cannot be reversed. Periodontitis leads to tooth loss and jaw bone resorption, which require extensive treatment to protect oral function. Widespread infection increases the risk is for developing oral cancer.
Although gum disease sounds like an unstoppable health concern, the health risks can be minimized by daily hygiene and routine dental visits.
What is Root Planning and Scaling?
Once pockets have developed, the exposed enamel and sub-gingival crown need to be kept clean. Root planing and scaling removes food particles and calculus buildup, preventing the spread of disease. Our dental care professionals use small instruments to eliminate the harmful materials. Quick and nearly painless, patients require little to no local anesthesia.
